For persons experiencing homelessness, the loss of a home may be the end result of an unfortunate cascade of events such as loss of a job, a dramatic decline in physical/mental health, or estrangement from family. These events experienced alone or in combination are the precipitating factors that cause homelessness, yet once individuals find themselves without a home, improvement in their health, their job status and their ability to develop and maintain relationships is generally contingent upon finding their way back to a stable housing situation.

One of the programs we financially support is housing assistance for clients that are case managed through the Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) Program. Clients are screened by the case managers and referred to the Clinic’s housing coordinator to determine their eligibility for federal and state assistance and also to determine their overall motivation and potential to attain self-sufficiency.

Those clients who are selected for the housing program receive assistance in selecting an apartment and obtaining a lease. Staff members from the HCH Clinic provide ongoing support services and home visits for the duration of the lease. These services include treatment for medical, dental, behavioral health and substance abuse issues. Progress for each household is monitored with the goal of complete self-sufficiency within a year.

Circle the City has provided financial assistance ranging from one-time security and/or utilities deposits up to one year of paid rent. The program has been very successful. Housing has allowed these clients to obtain stability and a sense of normalcy. Clients have gone on to obtain GEDs, some are in job training programs, and others have transitioned from apartments to government-subsidized housing.
