William Ellert, M.D.
Bill Ellert has spent most of his career working with the homeless and underserved. Initially as a Nurse Practitioner, he worked with the homeless and with migrants at Community of Hope Health Services and Columbia Road Health Services in Washington, D.C. After completing his medical studies he established a practice called Centro de la Esperanza in collaboration with St. Francis Hospital which was specifically designed to serve the Mexican Migrants in the area. While in Delaware, he also helped establish and served as Medical Director of House of Joseph II, a shelter for homeless men and women suffering from AIDS.
After moving to Phoenix, Bill served as the Chairman of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Maricopa Medical Center and developed a Fellowship Program designed to expand the expertise of Family Physicians so that they were better equipped to provide high quality, cost effective care, particularly in rural and underserved communities. Currently, Dr. Ellert is the Associate Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center, and works two days a week at Maricopa County Health Care for the Homeless.
Dr. Ellert completed his undergraduate studies at the Catholic University of America and his graduate studies at The University of Pennsylvania. His medical degree is from Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine. Dr. Ellert completed his residency in Family Medicine at the University of Minnesota. In 2009, Bill was recognized by his peers as American Family Physician of the Year. He was also recognized as the Arizona Family Physician of the Year in 2008, and the Maricopa Medical Center Physician of the Year in 2007.
